Reflection
In the beginning of this course I did not know anything about
culture and diversity. In the past, I have experienced a lot of culture shocks
when I came to the US in the first months and I was marked, I felt like I was
lost. But when the course started and we got our first worksheet about
“introduction to the culture” and, when I read it, I started to understand
something. And when we had a discussion in the class the following day about it
with my classmates who shared their experiences, I knew I was not alone in that
case, so share my too and I was relieved it was fun. I learned too from my
classmates, who talked to me about their culture.
My Aha moment was when the teacher
drew an iceberg explain how people are ethnocentric and, later become cultural
relativism. Because me too I thought my culture is superior and better than
others and later I can view, understand and even like other culture on my own
terms.
If I will create a bumper sticker, it
will be “Everything in one”. Because thanks to course on the culture, I can
understand the cultural wealth of the US. The United State is really like a
salad bowl.
I didn’t know that think that one’s
own culture is superior to another is not good because every culture is good
and nobody can judge any culture from his own. Now I know how to deal with any
culture.
